  • World Orienteering Championships: promotion and relegation outcomes
    1 Federations have 3 places Division 2 Federations have 2 places and Division 3 Federations have 1 place These Divisions have been used for the first time for the 2014 Championships just held in Italy The host Federation has 3 places regardless of which division it is in Points for each Federation are calculated by a system in which specific numbers of points equate to specific finishing positions in the Long and Middle races and the Relay in the previous two years Full details can be found in the document Specific Rules Qualification for the World Orienteering Championships Long and Middle distance competitions on the IOF website For each Federation the points are added to give a total men s score and a total women s score Separately for men and women the top 8 Federations are placed in Division 1 the next 14 in Division 2 and the rest in Division 3 WOC results from 2012 and 2013 were used to determine which division a Federation was allocated to for the 2014 WOC For 2015 and onwards a promotion and relegation system comes into effect The highest scoring Federation in Division 2 is promoted to Division 1 for the 2015 WOC and the lowest scoring Federation from Division 1 is relegated to Division 2 Two Federations are promoted from Division 3 and two relegated from Division 2 Calculations based on the results of the 2014 and 2013 Championships have now been completed and checked to determine which nations are promoted and relegated The outcomes are as follows Men Relegated from Division 1 to Division 2 Latvia Promoted from Division 2 to Division 1 Ukraine Relegated from Division 2 to Division 3 Spain Portugal Poland rank ahead of Spain because of their superior position in this year s Relay that

  • Sweden and Switzerland win Relays. Curtains down on WOC-WTOC in Italy
    was time for relays and déjà vù What happened in the rainy Italian summer was a photocopy of what happened last April in sunny Portugal when Switzerland and Sweden got the European title turned today into a World title Sweden and Denmark seemed to have the women s relay in total control until the second changeover when Judith Wyder jumped onto the field and recovered over 2 minutes delay in only 5 controls Alexandersson couldn t keep her pace and the thrilling last battle was between the Swiss and Maja Alm of Denmark Wyder eventually took a clear victory before Denmark and Sweden On the men s side the Swiss team started well and the second leg runner Daniel Hubmann reached the arena for changeover almost a minute ahead of Sweden and France But Gustav Bergman was ready for his personal show and the last leg for the Swede was simply breath taking Bergman and his team grabbed the World title by 1 minute and 9 seconds before Switzerland France finished third another déjà vù from EOC Regarding the total medal count hats off to Switzerland 3G 4S 1B Sweden closed second 2G 2S 2B and Denmark got the third spot 1G 3S 2B Relay Ladies 1 SWITZERLAND Sara Luescher Sabine Hauswirth Judith Wyder 111 21 2 DENMARK Emma Klingenberg Ida Bobach Maja Moeller Alm 111 32 3 SWEDEN Helena Jansson Annika Billstam Tove Alexandersson 113 56 4 NORWAY Heidi Bagstevold Tone Wigemyr Mari Fasting 115 45 5 FINLAND Sofia Haajanen Saila Kinni Minna Kauppi 119 03 Relay Men 1 SWEDEN Jonas Leandersson Fredrik Johansson Gustav Bergman 116 49 2 SWITZERLAND Fabian Hertner Daniel Hubmann Matthias Kyburz 117 58 3 FRANCE Frederic Tranchand Francois Gonon Thierry Gueorgiou 118 03 4 NORWAY Oystein Kvaal Osterbo Carl Godager Kaas Olav Lundanes 123

  • Middle: Billstam (SWE) and Lundanes (NOR) take gold
    Alexandersson of Sweden grabbed silver and bronze respectively On the men s side Norway s Olav Lundanes managed to keep at bay Fabian Hertner of Switzerland and Oleksandr Kratov of Ukraine and conquered his first ever Middle Distance World title Both male and female courses in Campomulo di Gallio Veneto region were both physically and technically challenging and Danish Ida Bobach seemed totally in control of the race from the beginning Alexandersson was the only one able to challenge the Dane in the first part while super favourite Minna Kauppi of Finland never entered the battle today In the second half of the course Annika Billstam pushed harder than anyone else and eventually crossed the finish line 22 seconds ahead of Bobach In the men s class some sort of a big drama took place when the last competitors entered the arena French superstar Thierry Gueorgiou was way ahead but he eventually got disqualified as he skipped the sixth control Olav Lundanes was then named the winner with Hertner in silver and Kratov in bronze Last day of the WOC 2014 in Italy tomorrow with the Relay events scheduled at 1pm followed by the closing ceremony at 8pm in Lavarone Middle Distance Men 1 Lundanes Olav NOR 38 12 2 Hertner Fabian SUI 38 30 3 Kratov Oleksandr UKR 38 46 4 Rollier Baptiste SUI 39 45 5 Kyburz Andreas SUI 40 05 6 Sild Lauri EST 40 39 7 Kaas Carl Godager NOR 41 28 8 Novikov Leonid RUS 41 29 9 Bergman Gustav SWE 41 54 10 Prochazka Jan CZE 41 57 10 Middle Distance Ladies 1 Billstam Annika SWE 37 03 2 Bobach Ida DEN 37 25 3 Alexandersson Tove SWE 37 27 4 Luescher Sara SUI 38 37 5 Fasting Mari NOR 38 53 6 Moeller

  • WOC 2014 Middle in Campomulo
    Campomulo which is part of Asiago karstic highland in the altitude of 1500 1700 meters above sea level The landscape is characterized by many terraces divided by steeper areas Vegetation varies from alpine pastures to open forests mainly coniferous and the ground surface is very rocky throughout reducing the runnability in the forest Trenches from World War are very common in this area The network of paths tracks and roads is not very dense Cross country ski tracks exist in parts of the area Last year Leonid Novikov surprised everybody including himself by winning the World Champions middle distance in Vuokatti Thierry Gueorgiou finished second after a one minute mistake at control which he never managed to fully catch up Sweden s Gustav Bergman became third Simone Niggli won Gold also on Middle after deciding a tricky middle distance for herself She won with 27 seconds to Mari Fasting and with nearly two minutes to silver medalist Tove Alexandersson who was in the lead at the beginning Like in the long distance today there will be everybody in the Finals But who are the favourites to take the WOC Middle title in this year s WOC in Italy Will the
