was written and produced by Burns Family Studios which is comprised of two Christian homeschool families nine cousins and their parents The Burns Family spent three years making this movie I first heard about it a couple of years ago and I ve been following its progress ever since I wasn t sure what to expect but when they came out with the trailer I was amazed at the quality and detail It looked like The Lord of the Rings How cool that homeschoolers were taking it upon themselves to make a historically accurate Arthurian film featuring virtuous men and women This movie portrays Arthur as a Christian and Merlin as a lone monk instead of a wizard Pendragon was honored to be a Feature Finalist this month at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival competing against Fireproof Expelled The Widow s Might and Pilgrim s Progress Although they said it was well received by the audience I was disappointed that Pendragon didn t win any awards I certainly thought it would because Pendragon must be the first independent Christian film of its kind ever attempted It s complete with detailed period sets historic costumes sword fights battles flames interesting storyline excellent cinematography professional sounding music score and great special effects Quite impressive especially considering that these are amateur film makers and not a professional Hollywood production Pendragon has raised the bar of Christian filmmaking and set a fine example for others to follow Pendragon begins in the year A D 411 as Roman Legions depart the Isle of Britain The people are left to defend themselves against Saxon barbarians who were coming in pillaging and plundering the British towns Artos Pendragon lives in a coastal village with his parents and sister Artos father teaches him that God has a purpose for his life but all seems lost when Saxon raiders burn the village murder his father and take Artos prisoner When Artos escapes to join the army of King Ambrosius who is also fighting the Saxons Artos wins favor in the sight of the king and his daughter Soon Artos discovers that following God s calling to drive the Saxons out of Britain will require him to choose between the girl he loves and the people he is called to defend The Burns family has been involved in film making for the past six years It all started when their youngest son Peter then eight decided to make a film about the history of manned flight The next movie he wrote directed and starred in Filmmaking has since become a major part of the Burns family s life and the whole family contributes to the making of a Burns Family film Pendragon was produced by Andrew and Raymond Burns directed by Chad Burns and edited by Nick Burns All of the costumes were meticulously designed by Shannon and Marilyn Burns The original music score was created by Aaron and Marilyn Burns The movie stars Aaron Burns Marilyn Burns

this movie Fireproof was produced by Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany Georgia the same multimedia ministry that made Facing the Giants and Flywheel so you may notice some subtle references and recognize a few familiar faces Simply put Fireproof is a touching heartwarming movie about the responsibilities of marriage in hard times as well as good times It was wonderful to see a realistic marriage with real struggles portrayed in such an uplifting yet true to life manner Moviegoers from all walks of life will surely come away from Fireproof with a sense of hope encouragement forgiveness and renewed commitment to loved ones I think everyone will be able to identify with the petty argument at the beginning of the movie since it sounds all too familiar I m sorry to say But Fireproof goes on to show how love is an action not just an emotion This movie celebrates those couples that are willing to make sacrifices to strengthen their relationship and ultimately stay together While Fireproof s theme makes for plenty of tearful moments there are also some exciting fire and rescue action sequences surprising plot twists and several humorous scenes that provide much needed comic relief It s awesome to see a film of this caliber hit the mainstream theaters without all of the blasphemy and other offensive stuff that is so prevalent in movies today Its popularity indicates that many people want to see these kinds of inspiring movies that you can go to with your family without fear of embarrassment The main characters do wrestle with sinful temptations but the sin issues are approached tastefully not glamorized in any way there is nothing explicit and the end result is an edifying one that will motivate viewers to steer clear of such parasites Somehow I doubt that Hollywood will sit up and take notice though The secular critics will most likely either ignore Fireproof or tear it to pieces I m shocked at the amount of hate speech that s been generated toward Christian films in general and Kirk Cameron in particular as a result of this movie Nevertheless it s my hope that these independent filmmakers will continue making uplifting films that promote traditional family values which the majority of Americans will appreciate As director Alex Kendrick said America has two cultures There s New York City and California and there s the way the rest of the country lives Now if a group of ordinary folks from small town America can produce a low budget film featuring an all volunteer cast and come in 4th place at the box office during opening weekend that s pretty impressive Especially since the movie had a limited release showing in only 839 theaters Fireproof grossed 6 5 million in just the first three days resulting in a large profit since its production cost was only 500 000 In comparison the leading movie of the weekend Eagle Eye opened in 3 510 theaters It made 29 2 million

t over at the end Hopefully they will come out with a director s cut that contains even more footage The word Expelled refers to all of the professors scientists and others who have been ostracized simply because they dared to mention intelligent design in the classroom in research papers or on the job The film s subtitle No Intelligence Allowed is a funny play on words referring to the fact that supposedly intelligent open minded academics aren t even allowing intelligent design as a topic of discussion Ironically this is happening in a country that upholds the freedom of thought and ideas above all else Remember the old bumper sticker slogan from the 1970 s that said Question authority Expelled is hosted by Ben Stein a lawyer economist speechwriter and comic actor who in recent years has become an outspoken advocate for the intelligent design movement With his characteristic style of deadpan humor combined with an interspersing of old black and white stock footage Stein creates an interesting and often entertaining look at the conflict between evolutionists and intelligent design proponents He even includes a light hearted animated cartoon of neo Darwinist Richard Dawkins playing a slot machine To underscore the seriousness of this movie however the visual metaphor of the Berlin Wall is prominently used to depict the barrier that s been erected by the scientific establishment as well as the media and the courts to keep out anyone who supports intelligent design Through clever editing and additional film clips it shows how Darwin s theory of evolution can be linked to eugenics euthanasia abortion Planned Parenthood Communists Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust About halfway into the film it may seem like Stein goes off on a tangent as he dwells on the Nazi association with Darwinism But you have to remember that Stein is Jewish so this particular subject was likely the most near and dear to his heart My husband always wondered why no one ever talked about the relationship between Darwin and Hitler so it was neat to see someone else come to the same conclusion Expelled portrays several people including Richard Sternberg Guillermo Gonzalez and Caroline Crocker as victims of persecution for their promotion of intelligent design and or for questioning Darwinism Other intelligent design supporters such as David Berlinski William Dembski Stephen Meyer and Jonathan Wells appear in the film as well Stein certainly can t be accused of denying the opposition a chance to tell their side of the story The film includes interviews with scientists and others who advocate the teaching of evolution and criticize intelligent design as an attempt to bring religion into the science classroom These include Richard Dawkins P Z Myers Will Provine Michael Ruse Michael Shermer and Eugenie Scott The interviews were quite eye opening to say the least It was infuriating to see the arrogant smugness of Eugenie Scott up there on the big screen As Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education she
