  • extension | hskupin.info
by the Mozilla QA Automation Services team which exists to support the Mozilla QA community by developing tools and frameworks for ease of testing And this time in case of the extension we even target web developers and our huge Firefox user base So what is it about Mid of December 2011 bug 711900 has been filed It complained about an increased garbage and cycle collector activity in Firefox 10 which was not existent in Firefox 9 So Mozilla QA has been asked to analyze that behavior and find possible use cases for reproduction While working on it we noticed that observing the related information about memory usage and garbage cycle collector activity wasn t that comfortable For the memory you have had to constantly watch and refresh about memory in a separate tab and the latter even forced us to always have the Error Console open and a specific hidden preference set To make it easier for us I had the idea of creating an extension which would be able to present all the necessary information at a prominent place and would be visible all the time There should be no need of switching tabs or scraping the Error Console for output Scraping was even hard because all entries constantly get wiped out when a maximum threshold of messages has been reached Further copying out this data is a hassle So lets create an extension with logging capabilities Some days later after an internal discussion across teams we started the development and called it the MemChaser project Based on the fantastic help from members of the SpiderMonkey team lets name Nicholas Nethercote and Andrew McCreight we got a very early prototype setup kinda quickly But as is turned out having an extension which needs a restart to get installed is pretty useless if the user is already facing a strange memory related issue So one of the bigger tasks was to get familiar with the Add on SDK project aka Jetpack and to transform the extension into a restartless one As it turned out the work wasn t that hard but gave us well better structured code and a nice toolchain to test and build the extension And finally with all the features implemented we were able to release the MemChaser extension on addons mozilla org The current set of features is not that big but covers all the requirements we got from the QA team We will make sure to enhance the extension drastically in the next couple of months so that it doesn t only display current values in the Add on bar But what is it doing right now As you can see in the image a couple of values are displayed But what do those stand for Here the answer Resident Memory mapped by the process that is present in physical memory It s normally the memory usage you will see in the systems process manager GC Duration of the last Garbage Collector activity and in brackets the time when the second last activity happened CC Duration of the last Cycle Collector activity and in brackets the time when the second last activity happened Logging Starts and stops the internal logger which writes out the current memory usage and GC CC activities to a log file which can be found in the memchaser sub directory of your Firefox profile All those information already helps a lot to keep track of memory related activities and enables someone to see if Firefox is using too much memory at all or is having long GC CC cycles which could freeze the UI of Firefox for short moments As I have mentioned above we will continuously enhance the features of the extension We already have some great ideas and I will certainly blog about those more in the next couple of days once we have updated our documentation and set milestones for the next releases For now please install the extension in your daily profile and watch the memory activities If you recognize strange behavior turn on logging and let us know by contacting us directly extension firefox memory mozqa Mozilla Mozmill Crowd 0 1 1 Release January 21 2011 Henrik Skupin Leave a comment After talking to one of my colleagues at Mozilla we have decided to push another minor release of the Mozmill Crowd extension as soon as possible The main task was to improve the user experience when using the extension The following fixes have been incorporated Save the screenshots which are automatically taken by the l10n test run into the screenshots folder of the extension storage That allows you to access those a way easier compared to before when you had to locate those first in the temporary folder Disable the slow script warning dialog which was unnecessary before because we already know that the test run will take longer than the 20s which are set as default After a successful test run show the logging information in the output section of the extension main window All those changes were part of Bug 627108 If you wanna give the extension a try you can find the Mozmill Crowd 0 1 1 release on AMO automat crowd extension firefox moz Mozilla mozmill testing Mozilla 1 Click Firefox functional testing with Mozmill Crowd January 18 2011 Henrik Skupin Leave a comment Firefox 4 the next major version of Mozilla s web browser will include hundreds of new features and enhancements A lot of those will happen in the background and will primarily not be visible at the front end A very good example for such a feature is the support for graphics hardware acceleration It will drastically improve the rendering of pages videos or the Firefox UI itself But noticeable it is only because it is that fast Alongside those back end features also the Firefox UI has been vastly changed Mainly you will notice the reduced amount of visible elements in the browsers chrome or the

  • MemChaser – An extension to track Firefox’s memory activities | hskupin.info
February 10 2012 Does the addon s functions affect general performance in any meaningful way Does having logging constantly enabled do I can always set up a scheduled cron job to delete old logs Reply Caspy7 View February 10 2012 Given that all installers of this extension may not read this blog entry or even if they do may not remember it all why don t you put the descriptions you just gave into tooltips that appear on hover You can even include the log file location bit under the current logging button text It may be a bit verbose but I think the current audience of this addon will be more helped than not Also I use a dark mostly black background Persona and the black text completely disappears on it Only the red text colored button gives evidence of the addon s presence Reply Lozzy View February 10 2012 Ferongr No from what I gather its affect on performance is next to nil 1 to Caspy s tooltip suggestion In addition it would be worth putting a link to this post in the Addon s description It has plenty of useful information which people who go AMO might otherwise miss Reply Henrik Skupin View February 10 2012 ferongr No as for now there is nothing which would affect the performance We will make it our priority to keep it that way Regarding your logging question you will have to enable logging manually after you have started Firefox We do not enable it automatically for now But it s nice idea I have created https github com whimboo memchaser issues 59 Caspy7 We are a bit limited by the Add on SDK for the time being There are some features we can t actually use because they are broken The color of the text is one example I have made it that way that at least most of our users will be able to read the text I will see what I can do for https bugzilla mozilla org show bug cgi id 718015 The tooltip is also not that easy to do for each single element because all the text you see is embedded inside an HTML frame I will check what s possible and have created an issue https github com whimboo memchaser issues 60 Lozzy Good idea I will make sure to add all the information to the description box of the add on on AMO Reply Caspy7 replied View February 12 2012 I at that issue for the tooltip It would be a very ugly thing to do but if it s possible perhaps copying and pasting the full list of helpful text into the widget tooltip would still make the addon overall more usable Just an interim workaround thought Reply geeknik View February 10 2012 Doesn t appear to be displaying anything in the latest nightly build of Firefox 13a1 Reply geeknik View February 10 2012 I take that back if I movie it

firefox Mozilla mozmill Software testing Mozilla Mozmill 1 4 released January 25 2010 Henrik Skupin 5 Comments The new version of Mozmill brings some under the hood changes to the Python back end The patch on Bug 533227 adds report support for restart tests which can push results to a couchdb instance now With Mozmill 1 3 only normal Mozmill tests had that capability Further we have improved the handling of Python callbacks from within Mozmill tests While the former version of Mozmill has only supported those callbacks for restart tests you can use them in normal tests Bug 538058 now The only restriction is that the test run has to be started from the command line client Users with only the extension installed will not have access to this feature In the future we will probably use it to implement handling of system level elements and events Ongoing work can be checked on Bug 525060 Another great enhancement we are proud to announce are the simplified steps to install Mozmill as command line client on Windows The only requirement we have is the Mozilla Build environment There is no need to install Python or the pywin32 extension in parallel anymore Complete instructions can be found on MDC A big thanks goes to Atul Varma for his contribution You helped us a lot For more information check out the complete list of fixes Mozmill 1 4 is still in the review queue on addons mozilla org It will take a bit until it is officially available there So for now grab a copy from Mikeal s repository and give it a try Mozilla mozmill Software testing Mozilla Firefox 3 6 and me January 22 2010 Henrik Skupin 1 Comment Yesterday the Mozilla Corporation has been released the brand new Firefox 3 6 which is the successor of Firefox 3 5 and has a couple of interesting new features and speed enhancements aboard Let s have a quick look at the release notes and checkout what makes it a shiny and brilliant new version With the Lightweight Themes support users will be able to skin their browser chrome without having to install Personas Browse through the list of the most popular Personas and hover the different themes to see a preview directly pinned onto your browser A click on Wear It will finally choose the skin The new outdated plug in protection checks the installed plug ins on your system and will warn you when a newer and safer version is available Enjoy full screen playback for HTML5 video elements Improved start up times better responsiveness and faster Javascript execution which were a main focus for 3 6 Support for new CSS attributes like gradients background sizing and pointer events Support for new DOM and HTML5 specifications including the Drag Drop API and the File API Firefox 3 6 blocks unknown and vulnerable libraries to lower the risk of crashes In the past a couple of 3rd party tools have been circumvent the official way in installing add ons which lead to a significant number of crashes after an upgrade of Firefox Full list of features With a release cycle of only 7 months Mozilla has been shown that it s possible to release a new major version of the Firefox browser in such a short interval And that s absolutely necessary when comparing Firefox with products of other browser vendors Bringing the newest technology as fast as possible to our users will full fill their needs and finally help the continuously increment of market share But all that work wouldn t have been possible without the help of the overwhelming community around Firefox Thousands of contributors spent hours of their spare time in developing localizing and testing Firefox We can always repeat Thank you soo much For myself it was the second Firefox release I have worked on as an employee of the Mozilla Corporation and each week has been shown that it is a pleasure to work with all those amazing people around the world I m feeling great to be able to spend all my time fully devoted to Firefox It was a great experience and a path of learning new technology improving social interactions and making the web better Given Firefox 3 6 I was able to work on projects like DLL blocklisting Components folder lockdown 3rd party applications which install their own modules inside the components folder of Firefox or LSP s Layered Service Provider which get bind to the Firefox process can crash Firefox With DLL blocklisting those crashing or malicious modules will be blacklisted and not loaded anymore On the other hand only known XPCOM modules will be loaded thanks to the components folder lockdown feature Both features have been tested with various top100 3rd party applications Tab Network Prioritization Restoring a Firefox session with a dozen of open tabs in one or multiple windows slows down the restoration process more or less Until now there was no specification in which order those tabs get loaded Means tabs outside of the visible tabbar or in underlying windows were restored in parallel As result you had to wait longer until the currently selected tab has been finished loading From now on the current tab has the highest priority followed by visible tabs in the same window and tabs in underlying windows As tests have been shown this feature works very well in Firefox 3 6 More improvements will come with the next version Crashkill To lower the number of crashes for Firefox the Crashkill project has been initiated a while back In the last quarter I was able to work on a couple of those bugs Thanks goes to Chris Hofmann who showed me a couple of nifty tricks and tools regarding crash analysis Mozmill As the lead of the Mozmill test automation process I had to put focus on Firefox 3 6 So all manual tests from the Smoketest and BFT testgroup which have
