into an experience I cannot name Kansallisteatteri Ulla Jokisalo Something that cannot be spoken of In a brilliantly interwoven way taboo is on many levels the essence of this opus It is present in the name of the play in the way the audience processes it in the very way it is performed and even in my own thoughts about it Yet the connotations of the word are challenged because the taboo is brought out and placed right in front of us The director Kristian Smeds breaks the rules of theatre invents his own rules or doesn t even give rules a thought Whatever he does he s not afraid to violate conventions and he seems to be following whatever it is that leads him forward towards creating The performance has no dialogue the two actors Seela Sella and Tero Jartti don t utter a single word and the only line from the book the play is based on is heard through speakers God you did not look towards me when I needed you You God I do not wish to know nor meet nor love With these words I leave my God The play certainly serves as a tribute to Timo K Mukka the Finnish author and artist whose second book bears the same name and who is known for writing about religion and sexuality in small village communities of Lapland Although the tribute becomes evident through the director s choice of providing us with a large reflection of Mukka s name on the stage an understanding or previous knowledge of Mukka is not crucial for an appreciation of the performance I interpret the play as self scrutiny Both of the characters on stage but also of myself Watching someone else delve deep into what is hidden and forbidden

and joy Now imagine that instead of your folks applauding at your elementary school s Christmas play you know that people around the world are applauding at and for you I think I the audience ought to play my part in that feeling So the next time someone snorts Ha ha don t they know the actors cannot hear them after a broadcast play I just smirk shake my head and think buddy I think they can Tagged arts appreciation genuine is the new cool theatre Costumes Cues and Sheep By Hanna Heiskanen Hanna Heiskanen October 29 2013 10 00 am Culture Leave a comment Let s take it again from the beginning Ritabrata Dutta the director of Thespians Anonymous autumn production Garden of Delights orders On stage fake tears have just been shed by Christina Rees an exchange student from Germany where she studies American and British Studies and one of the stars in the show Present at a rehearsal space in Sörnäinen are also other actors the stage manager and musicians who have composed music for the production With less than seven weeks to the premier the cast and production teams are busy putting the performance together BTSB caught up with Christina Aino Suoranta an English Philology freshman and Ida Mauko an MA student in English and originally from Croatia to find out what goes into the making of an amateur theatre production Founded in 1999 Thespians Anonymous Theatrical Society is one of the few theatre companies making theatre in English in Helsinki In addition to The Finn Brit Players it s the only one open for anyone and everyone to join In the past productions have ranged from musicals to Shakespeare This autumn the group is tackling Garden of Delights a surrealist play written by the Spanish playwright Fernando Arrabal in 1968 With a challenging text and taking advantage of shadow theatre and video projections it s a leap from the company s usual repertoire It s definitely a strange play and unlike anything I ve ever done before Aino says Although she s only just joined the company she has a history of participating in theatre clubs since the tender age of seven Christina is also a newcomer in Thespians but has a background of acting both in theatre and student films She spotted Thespians stand at the Welcome Fair for exchange students and decided to audition for their production just for the experience She too had her doubts about the play in the beginning It sounded weird at first but when I read it I was completely drawn to its structure and choice of words and now have one of the main roles she explains After an audition rehearsals can begin Creating a character can be demanding for the actor especially in a show such as Garden of Delights The director s feedback has a significant influence on how a character is shaped and conversations with the other actors help as well Rehearsals are important

  • gifts - Better Than Sliced Bread
the giver for example ornaments or art meant to be put on display in your house No matter how much you hate them you must reserve some spot for them in case the giver shows up for a visit Next there s The Passive Aggressive aka Mother in Law Gift I actually have a pretty good relationship with my mother in law and usually gifts from her are more or less harmless things such as fluffy socks or chocolate Then one year I got a set of white towels I couldn t help but wonder if there wasn t a hidden message attached since in Finnish the meaning of to receive towels something along the line of being told off Also white linen is absolutely impossible to keep white and requires an enormous effort Next is The Well Meant Misfire Maybe it s the generation gap or what not but senior citizens are notorious for getting stuff horribly wrong My grandmother usually keeps my sock inventory in check but one year she thought it wise to venture into the underwear department Need I say more Well the really sad thing about it was that I honestly thought that she had mixed up the name tags and that I had just opened my mum s gift and said it out loud I guess it s safe to say that she got the point Last but not least The Super Cheap Gift Gifts should not be measured by their monetary value but there s cheap and then there s cheap Nowadays companies no longer hand out gifts to their employees Instead they have noble policies about assigning the amount to a charity or some good cause No one really knows how much is given or where it ends up neither do they really care Back in the day when old fashioned gifts were still the norm they were so crappy that receiving them was mostly embarrassing One year it was an ugly candle lighter no charger fluid included the next it was a small jar of mustard tasted hideous and ultimately it was a tin of biscuits also inedible Knowing what not to get is the easy part but a couple of definite no no s don t really help with the task at hand By the time Christmas gets so close that you re able to count the remaining time in hours instead of days there comes a moment when all the advertisement shoved through our letter box since early November suddenly begin to make a lot of sense That s when you catch yourself thinking it s the thought that counts And anyway it wouldn t be Christmas without fluffy socks and a box or two of assorted chocolates Merry Christmas everyone Tagged Christmas Christmas Eve crappy gifts December gifts socks The All About Me Gift The Passive Agressive aka Mother in Law Gift The Super Cheap Gift The Well Meant Misfire TIME Magazine worst Christmas gifts BTSB Graphic Novel Gift Guide By Esko Suoranta Esko Suoranta December 13 2012 4 05 pm Culture Leave a comment Don t know what to ask Santa for Christmas or just looking for comics that pleasantly tingle the insides of your sophisticated cranium Fret no more BTSB is here to help offering a selection of great titles we ve come across in the past few years And don t forget to see if these fine works are stocked by Helsinki comic book stores Asterios Polyp David Mazzucchelli 2009 For those expecting something along the lines of Mazzucchelli s early work like Batman Year One Asterios Polyp will prove to be something else entirely It tells the story of the eponymous protagonist Asterios an architect by trade who loses his life as he s known it after a lightning strikes his apartment building and burns it to the ground A journey of revelation muted hurt and partial reconciliation ensues as we learn the events behind his failed marriage his genius and hubris Mazzucchelli uses a palette of cyan magenta and yellow and gives all his characters a distinct visual identity playing around with the pictorial language of the comic book form and experimenting with the relation of parts to overall structure a recurring theme in the story too This is a meaningful surprising and compelling story from one of the masters of the whole genre Whatever you do don t open the last page first before getting there Civil War Mark Millar Steve McNiven 2006 2007 Our Marvel title for the holidays Civil War is an easily accessible way into the amorphous Marvel Universe It includes a lot of the famous characters but manages to balance them so that they remain interesting The story rises from the aftermath of a government act supported by Iron Man among others requiring superhumans to register and become accountable and traceable In a dramatic twist of events Iron Man and Captain America end up in different camps and writer Millar actually pulls the stunt off entertainingly and believeably ripping something new out of the two superheroes Civil War is distinctly a post 9 11 book even if it does not offer the most comprehensive or original allegory of USA at the time It is drawn nicely and the vast cast of characters has received the attention they deserve for example female superheroes are not mere body doubles of each other but personal and distinct Tamara Drewe Posy Simmonds 2005 2007 Tamara Drewe originally appeared in The Guardian from 2005 to 2007 and has later been collected in both hard and soft covers as well as interpreted in the 2010 film by Stephen Frears It balances on the thin line between graphic novel and illustrated book being first of all a closely written piece of art Following a year in the life of a quiet English country town and a writers retire there it combines nicely voiced characters with intrigue thrill and sexy romance Simmonds s visual style is
