  • Is he Jesus really the one?
After all had not Matthew also reported John the Baptist saying Matthew 3 3 This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said The voice of one crying out in the wilderness Prepare the way of the Lord make his paths straight John the evangelist wrote of these events having John the Baptist give us the words we still use of Jesus today in our central act of worship in the Eucharist when as the bread is being broken for distribution in communion we rehearse The Lamb of God the Agnus Die Lamb of God you take away the sin of the world have mercy on us The scriptural basis of the liturgy is John 1 29 The next day he John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and declared Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world Or as others have put it in English Behold the lamb of God or Look the lamb of God Words truly spoken in faith after the consecrated bread is held up for the people to see Look the Lamb of God These words came to us from John the Baptist It is even possible that this saying was already recognisable to the followers of Jesus from its use at the Lord s Supper before they read it in John s gospel Then follows in John s gospel the same affirmation we had from Matthew and the other writers This is he of whom I said After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me John 1 30 So he had said This is the one but now we read that later he sent to ask Are you the one There is a good deal for us to learn from this From the point of view of the evangelist telling the story of Jesus and his forerunner John the Baptist a life of faith need not be lived without questions Faith is not blind belief but open to evidence John was able to ask and Jesus gave him an answer in terms of looking and seeing Faith is about seeing the whole of it knowing what the evidence means We too are invited to look and see and learn from the evidence Indeed that is why the gospels were written So Jesus answered John by pointing to the evidence that John s disciples could see for themselves Matthew 11 2 6 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for another 4 Jesus answered them Go and tell John what you hear and see 5 the blind receive their sight the lame walk the lepers are cleansed the deaf hear the dead are raised and the poor have good news brought to them 6 And blessed is anyone who takes

  • Mary the Mother of Jesus
person When the shepherds came for example and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart Luke 2 18 19 She would have added to those words that she pondered the gifts of the wise men and the words of old Simeon and Anna in the temple even though there was a threat in Simeon s prophetic words Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed 35 so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too Luke 2 34 35 Caring and anxious mother Matthew 2 13 14 2 20 21 Luke 2 41 51 Matthew 12 46 50 Mark 3 31 35 Luke 8 19 21 Indeed she had cause for worry along the way long before she stood by him at the cross They had to run away to Egypt to escape Herod s murderous intentions and to risk the return journey when travel was none too save in any case They had reason for fear and knew anxiety with this baby Joseph found that he had married a dangerous wife They took risks and must have been anxious Indeed Matthew described the emotions of Mary and Joseph in just those terms when Jesus was lost in Jerusalem when he was twelve years old Well he was lost as far as they were concerned although he did not think he was lost When his parents saw him they were astonished and his mother said to him Child why have you treated us like this Look your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety Luke 2 48 These are very human reactions and see how it is Mary who admonishes him not Joseph she is the one who takes the initiative And again she has cause to ponder Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them His mother treasured all these things in her heart Luke 2 51 He must have been a puzzle to her It was she Mary who later when his ministry in Galilee had begun who went after him with his brothers and tried to bring him out of the crowd in Capernaum Were they trying to rescue him In any case he did not grant them any special privilege indeed the contrary saying that all his disciples were his mother and sisters and brothers One of the early group of disciples John 2 1 5 12 There is something of the same attitude in the story of the wedding at Cana though here Mary is seen to have some knowledge of his special powers he is still reluctant to act for her When the wine gave out the mother of Jesus

  • Christmas Day Dialogue Sermon
Someone who lived with very ordinary people Yet he really was a king someone people called Lord Carrie Lord King or Messiah a great leader sent by God The angel also said this baby was to be their saviour David But Carrie what is a saviour How do you understand it who this baby was Carrie Matthew says in the passage we read in church yesterday She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus for he will save his people from their sins Matthew 1 21 David Yes of course The literal meaning of the name Jesus is saviour saying he will save people Carrie Just as David means beloved and Peter means rock David Jesus means saviour As the angel said to Joseph you are to name him Jesus for he will save people from their sins Carrie There is a hymn too in the first verse remember Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas day to save us all from Satan s power when we were gone astray and it s tidings of comfort and joy David Comfort and joy comfort and joy because Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas day Saviour How can we understand what it means I suppose if someone is drowning and someone jumps into the water and pulls them out they have saved them That person would be a kind of saviour Carrie It is also like a judge who paid the fine for the guilty person who happened to be his daughter David Yes or like someone who comes into a battle takes our side and saves us from defeat A champion like young David when he killed the giant In fact according the Gospel Jesus did overcome enemies for us he drove out evil spirits challenged prejudice healed people even raised some from the dead We say he conquered sin and death Carrie It wasn t just what happened long ago it affects us now We still need to be saved There is evil in the world and we do sin we sometimes choose to do what we know is wrong David So what happened long ago through this baby born at Bethlehem has something to do with how we live today Carrie but it s still hidden from most of us most of the time The trouble is people find this idea of sin difficult David Most people do not really think they are bad people But sin is not just breaking a few rules is it Carrie Its really about separation from God David So God because he cared about our relationship with him had to do something to make it right again somehow to relate us again to himself to reconcile us Carrie And that was costly We are thankful to God and celebrate Christmas because he paid a price for us to be reconciled to himself The real meaniang of Christmas is found in what we remember at Easter what happened later

do something Or perhaps you have been able to imagine a little of what it was like to be the first to go to some place or to follow a new way by following closely someone who went before you Christmas marks the beginning of the earthly life of Jesus but it is more than that Because Jesus was who he is the Messiah our Saviour it is also a new beginning for us the human race In the letter to the Hebrews Jesus our Saviour was called a pioneer looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith Heb 12 2 and he is called the pioneer of their salvation Heb 2 10 He was the first to go along a way which others would follow He worked to open up that way for them The pioneer can also be understood as author and leader The key point is that he was the originator of the way to eternal life John 14 2 4 To open up this way for us he had to start where we are taking our flesh upon himself living our ordinary life and dying our death Hebrews 2 14 15 Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect Heb 2 17 That was the point of the incarnation his being born a man so that the word became flesh John 1 14 By identifying himself completely with us Jesus the Christ was able to represent us as our great high priest mediating between us and God to offer a perfect sacrifice on our behalf to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people 18 Because he himself was tested by what he suffered he is able to help those who are being tested Heb 2 17 18 It was for this reason that the angel spoke of good news of great joy when the birth of a Saviour was announced He became one of us to pioneer the way of life for us to follow and enjoy RCL Resources Index Order of Service Christmas 1 Year A The Gathering of the People of God CALL TO WORSHIP Praise the LORD Praise the LORD from the heavens praise him in the heights Praise him all his angels praise him all his host Praise him sun and moon praise him all you shining stars Praise him you highest heavens Let them praise the name of the LORD for he commanded and they were created Psalms 148 1 5 HYMN Jesus comes with all his grace AHB149 TIS 219 PRAYER OF ADORATION CONFESSION We have failed to love you with all our heart and to be good stewards of your creation Lord have mercy Lord have mercy We have failed to take up the cross of discipleship and to be good stewards of your gospel Christ have mercy Christ have mercy We have failed to be faithful members of your church and to be good stewards of your

  • tell of your name to my brothers and sisters in the midst of the congregation I will praise you Psalms 22 19 22 He became the first to go through the difficulties which all human beings face and yet alone come out of the struggle perfect thus once and for all denying the powers of evil the last word It was fitting that God for whom and through whom all things exist in bringing many children to glory should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings Heb 2 10 He was made perfect through suffering so that he perfected or completed the way for us He was the origin the beginning of it all and he became the fulfilment the end to which it moved the completion or the perfection of human life The pioneer of eternal life So we say with the book of Revelation that he is Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end the origin and the completion of human life I am the Alpha and the Omega the first and the last the beginning and the end Revelation 22 13 Having accepted the humility of ordinary human life and the humiliation of a criminal s death he was the first to be raised from the dead thus demonstrating the triumph of his life over the final enemy of humanity that is death He is the head of the body the church he is the beginning the firstborn from the dead so that he might come to have first place in everything Colossians 1 18 Being the first to win the victory he opened the way for all who share in his death by denying themselves and following him to share in his life through faith that is to share in his risen life which triumphs over death For if we have been united with him in a death like his we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his Romans 6 5 He opened the way for us to follow him to the place he is preparing for us in the Kingdom of God In my Father s house there are many dwelling places If it were not so would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and will take you to myself so that where I am there you may be also And you know the way to the place where I am going John 14 2 4 Remember how Philip then said that they did not know where he was going how could they know the way and Jesus replied I am the way the way the truth and the life He is great pioneer of eternal life but to open the way for us to follow he had to start from where we were So he shared our common life our flesh Therefore he had to become
