  • How to ensure a credible and efficient IPBES? — ALTER-Net: Europe's ecosystem research network
UFZ Germany an ALTER Net partner was a co author of the paper Abstract The accelerated loss of biodiversity impaired ecosystem services and lack of policy action pose a major threat to human welfare The installation of an Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPBES as decided upon at the UN general assembly in December 2010 will provide a much needed framework to better coordinate global response to biodiversity loss The Busan Outcome laid out the foundation of the structure function and governance of the IPBES However the main goal is to make IPBES credible and effective Here we discuss three main challenges for IPBES 1 How to identify topics for the agenda and the assessments 2 how to organise the assessment process and 3 how to make findings more policy relevant In this contribution we recommend that scientists actively act as early warners identify pertinent topics that unify different stakeholders and reflect the characteristics of the different regions and scales Science has to be independent and improve its communication e g through the elaboration of different models and policy scenarios A short reflection on fairness and effectivity leads to the conclusion that trust due to transparency will be one of the main factors that determines the success of IPBES More information View online you may need a subscription to Science Direct Details Katrin Vohland Musa C Mlambo Luiz Domeignoz Horta Bege Jonsson Axel Paulsch Sylvia I Martinez How to ensure a credible and efficient IPBES Environmental Science Policy Available online 1 October 2011 ISSN 1462 9011 10 1016 j envsci 2011 08 005 http www sciencedirect com science article pii S1462901111001389 The First Session of the Plenary Meeting on the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPBES is taking place from 3 7

  • International collaboration for sharing biodiversity data — ALTER-Net: Europe's ecosystem research network
A new technical collaboration to promote efficient sharing of biodiversity data for science and society has been announced by two leading global initiatives The Encyclopedia of Life EOL is now able to harvest information from content partners using data standards compatible with and derived from those used by the GBIF The collaboration aims to enable institutions to use a single publication process to make their data accessible through both platforms simultaneously reaching a wide spectrum of users from scientists and decision makers to students and the general public Both groups have hailed the development as a breakthrough in the effort to provide incentives for the sharing of data by enabling interoperability between systems instead of developing different standards for different platforms See the full news article on the GBIF website Filed under news ext Check out our sister website News Views for links to nature and biodiversity news stories polls and featured topics Nature in the news Sharing the planet Hen harrier conservation and grouse shooting Oct 22 2014 Public help needed to map fungus infecting invasive ladybird Oct 16 2014 Status of chalara ash dieback in the UK Oct 10 2014 Invasive alien quagga mussel arrives in UK Oct

and often about a rather different topic This goes on for a few days as a way of avoiding too linear thinking we then make a field trip which takes us down from the Alps to the lower lands of Provence to study the processes of land use change in the lavender fields of the Plateau de Valensole on the beach of the tourist machine Lac de St Croix and in the gorges of the Verdon After the school many Peyresq participants become members of a global alumni network that now comprises about 340 people participants speakers conveners included Looking at this list of names and addresses indicates that an idea seems to have found a substrate to grow upon What is this idea and how has it evolved Many Peyresq participants become members of a global alumni network that now comprises about 340 people About 10 years ago the idea of quantifying the importance of ecosystem functioning for people was not widely accepted certainly not in the conservation community but it was slowly gaining momentum in some interdisciplinary communities concerned with trade offs between different social actors who depend on intact ecosystems To bring this idea into a training situation was the key concept of a concerted action funded by the European Commission Integrated Assessment of Vulnerable Ecosystems under Global Change AVEC Rik Leemans Wageningen The Netherlands was one of its co founders In AVEC we developed the basic summer school idea and successfully implemented it in 2003 and 2005 just in time for the arrival of the much larger Network of Excellence ALTER Net on the European scene ALTER Net allowed us to continue and further develop the main ideas and it provided the basis for yearly events 2011 was the sixth of these Rik s place having been taken halfway through by Allan Watt The impact of the Peyresq pressure cooker on ALTER Net itself may be subject to different opinions We think we have observed a considerable change of thinking in the community leading to more openness for the idea of quantifiable ecosystem services than existed in 2001 and more generally to a better understanding across disciplinary boundaries such as that between ecologists and economists This mainstreaming is obviously a global process and only in some part perhaps driven by debates in the small Peyresq seminar room But the yearly discussions about future schools and their contents have probably caused reflection also among people not directly involved just as the interactions between alumni and their respective communities undoubtedly have We think we have observed a considerable change of thinking in the ALTER Net community leading to more openness for the idea of quantifiable ecosystem services than existed in 2001 and more generally to a better understanding across disciplinary boundaries such as that between ecologists and economists 2011 is the year where the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research PIK ends its involvement Sabine Lütkemeier the geologist who had been a key figure in both management and
