  • ALTER-Net Summer School 2012 — ALTER-Net: Europe's ecosystem research network
Services The school is a unique opportunity to explore this important issue with like minded post graduate students and young scientists mostly from Europe About 20 speakers will give presentations on this subject The programme typically includes two talks in the morning and an aperitif talk in the late afternoon before dinner All talks will include ample time for discussions As the speakers will stay for some days in Peyresq informal discussions often go on till late at night Tutors guide the working groups in the afternoons to focus on real world examples connected to the theme of the school A field trip illustrates land use change in Provence Of course there will also be opportunities to relax in the beautiful village of Peyresq and its surroundings The Summer School objectives The ALTER Net Summer Schools aim to contribute to the durable integration and spread of excellence within and beyond the network with a view to promote interdisciplinary approaches The 2012 Summer School will focus on Biodiversity and ecosystems Ecosystem processes function services and benefits Resilience of social and natural systems Valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services Linking biodiversity research with policy and the public How much does it cost A registration fee of 800 Euro is charged which includes the lectures the excursion accommodation in double rooms and meals A small number of support grants to waive part or all of the fee are available for students from developing countries and countries with economies in transition details available on request please contact Albert Corporaal Eligibility The ALTER Net summer schools are open to young graduate and post graduate scientists from the network partners and universities in Europe Two participants from developing countries can participate as well see note above about support grants Adequate English skills are required All participants

  • Multi-site experiments — ALTER-Net: Europe's ecosystem research network
dung beetle assemblages has an impact on dung decomposition and secondary seed dispersal processes The added value of working at the multi site level is the wide bioclimatic range of sites for this reason sites throughout the entire Western Palaearctic zone are included This allows also us to investigate whether predicted climate change will have an impact on these processes through the changes it induces in dung beetle assemblage composition In 2014 the experiment was run at 12 study sites in eight European countries MSE II The impact of nutrients and climate on litter decomposition Our second multi site experiment addressed the variation of litter decomposition across a European gradient Specifically the study investigated the impact of nutrient availability along a broad climatic gradient to explore the impact of nutrients and climate on decomposition This MSE involved 20 experimental sites in 10 countries with 8 grassland sites and 12 in forested ecosystems Read the full report MSE I Effects of trampling on plant assemblages This experiment looked at vegetation responses to disturbance by trampling which is an important factor controlling the assemblage of plants We established 39 experimental sites in 10 European countries 17 sites were in grassland 22 in

  • Ecosystem Services governance — ALTER-Net: Europe's ecosystem research network
ecosystems The concept of ecosystem services has been introduced to integrate the protection of biodiversity and use of nature It is gaining political momentum in natural resource management Yet little research is available on the economic social and cultural values of ecosystem functions or on the integration of ecosystem services approaches to land use planning and management decisions its implications for legal systems and everyday practices of natural resource use ALTER Net has launched a process to identify and prioritize interdisciplinary research needs linked with ecosystem services The main aim is to support the formation of active research teams by bringing together researchers with different disciplines within and between ALTER Net partner institutes and stakeholders from policy making management livelihoods civil society and science donors This aspect of ALTER Net s work is led by staff at the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE who maintain a set of web pages about the work Find out more Visit SYKE s web pages for this project Read our policy brief on biodiversity and ecosystem services Learn about our related bioenergy pilot project Contact for more information Taru Peltola senior researcher Finnish Environment Institute SYKE firstname surname ymparisto fi taru peltola About ALTER Net

  • Bioenergy pilot project — ALTER-Net: Europe's ecosystem research network
to make a synthesis of knowledge needs related to interlinkages between bioenergy and biodiversity This activity is a pilot for a framework to tackle with new unexpected challenges affecting biodiversity There is a great need for this kind of a framework for synthesizing rapidly research outputs for decision making The synthesis on the interlinkages between bioenergy and biodiversity will be distributed to both policy makers and researchers This ALTER Net activity is led by staff at the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE who maintain separate web pages with more information Related publication Some of ALTER Net s work in this area has been published in a book by Eeva Furman Riku Varjopuro and Taru Peltola Interdisciplinary research framework for identifying research needs Case bioenergy biodiversity interlinkages Lambert Academic Publishing A loss of biological diversity continues in spite of the existing and in some respects rather elaborate and heavy attempts at management and protection It has been argued that one of the reasons for the lack of success is the unmet and challenging knowledge needs Meeting the needs requires integration of various sciences and expertise since attempts to manage biodiversity gives rise also to many emerging complex and political questions Integration of the disciplines needs practices that are able to overcome practical institutional and cultural obstacles ALTER Net a European network for research on biological diversity under the 6th framework programme has aimed to undertake further interdisciplinary research that will feed into the addressing of societal needs This book presents a framework which creates possibilities for communication between research and decisionmaking By using the framework relevant topics for discussion are brought up emerging research needs are reacted to for elaboration into concrete research projects and finally research findings are conveyed to support decision making To achieve this requires organised and open collaboration
